Routes & SkillsThe main routes require 13,000 feet of elevation gain over terrain ranging from dirt trails to rocky moonscapes to icy glaciers near its summit. Trips are typically 5-7 days long, although likelihood of success is greater on a 6- or 7-day trip. Guides and porters are required and help support the local economy. Physical RequirementsAll routes on Kilimanjaro require 13-15,000 feet of elevation gain while carrying a light day pack up to 15-20 pounds. Trips require substantial cardiovascular stamina and strength endurance in the muscles of the legs, core, and upper back/shoulders, as well as capability of sustained steady exertion at high altitudes. |
